Sunrise over the Upper Rhine valley
Sunrise over the Upper Rhine valley. Picture taken from the Rocher du Coucou in the Vosges mountain above our village of La Vancelle. In the background the Black Forest mountains (Germany). In the middle, le plain of the Rhine river.

We initially launched this Best-Of-Upper-Rhine.com blog in order to help our guests staying in one of our holiday apartments in Alsace discovering the beautiful surrounding region within a radius of approx 2 hours driving.

The Upper Rhine (French: Rhin Supérieur – German: Oberrhein) is the section of the Rhine in the Upper Rhine Plain between Basel, Switzerland and Bingen, Germany.
Countries and states along the Upper Rhine are Switzerland, France (Alsace) and the German states of Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse. The largest cities along the river are Basel, Mulhouse, Strasbourg, Mannheim, Ludwigshafen and Mainz.
On the left Bank, we find the French region of Alsace and the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate; on the right bank, the German states of Baden-Württemberg and Hesse. The first few kilometers are in the Swiss city of Basel.

Swiss Alps in the far seen from the Alsace vineyards of Mittelwihr
Just before sunrise end of December: the Swiss Alps in the far (190 kilometers away) seen from the Alsace vineyards of Mittelwihr near Riquewihr. The church towers of Mittelwihr in the foreground. The city of Colmar (only 14 km away) seems to be at the bottom of the Alps.

We started with information about Alsace because so many things are happening there during Christmas time. Step by step, we will explore this amazing and compact region of the Upper Rhine. Also – apart from the locals – a “still to discover” region.

Les Remparts de Riquewihr (Ramparts of Riquewihr) is our small family business founded and run by us, Martine and Jean-Paul Krebs. We are a couple of tourism professionals having many years of experience in airline business and travels who decided to restore some old national heritage houses in Riquewihr and create some of the most beautiful vacation apartments.

We think that – especially for a rather long stay (most of our guests are discovering the slow travel concept and are staying 7 nights and more) – it is not enough to sleep well during the night but it is necessary to enjoy the stay in a place which is somehow of the same level as the historical surroundings, the landscape, the mountain and the vineyards: beautiful. We put a lot of effort and care in the renovation and decoration of our vacation rental apartments because we want our holiday homes to be a memorable part of your travel experience to Alsace and France.

Located in the gorgeous medieval city of Riquewihr and in the little mountain village of La Vancelle in Alsace, we are proud to offer 15 beautiful apartments to rent for your holidays.

Our vacation rentals in Riquewihr can be seen and booked online on the following website: www.i-love-riquewihr.com

Our vacation rentals in the little mountain village La Vancelle (beautiful setting with a view on the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle) can be seen and booked online on the following website: www.i-love-alsace.com

Riquewihr as well as La Vancelle are a very practical base to visit all Alsace, the Vosges mountains but also nearby Germany and Switzerland. This means our holiday apartments are the perfect place to be to discover the Upper Rhine region. We created this blog to help our guests organize some beautiful days out while staying at one of our places.
