According to tradition, the first Christmas songs were sung by the angels above the crib to celebrate the birth of baby Jesus. Historically, the first Christmas songs were songs of joy evoking the Nativity, sometimes even rhythmic chants or dances. During the Middle Ages, the “mysteries of the Nativity” were a popular theater form where are staged chapters of the New Testament concerning Jesus’ birth. These scenes were accompanied by specific songs, kind of Christmas carols. Today in Alsace that kind of theater is still alive with the representation of a Christmas story on the forecourt of the church St-Thiebaut in Thann (in the south of Alsace near Guebwiller) during the Advent time.
